Brief History

POlice Mom

The Town of Newton, New Hampshire lies in the southern part of Rockingham County, partially bordered by Massachusetts. With a population of approximately 4,500 people, Newton is nearly 10 square miles in size, and has almost 42 road miles. Originally part of Amesbury, Massachusetts and then South Hampton, New Hampshire, Newton officially became a town in 1749.

In 1921, when the Newton Police Department was established, there were no police cruisers and no police station. Officers dispatched emergency calls from their homes, and used their own personal vehicles to respond to these calls and make routine patrols throughout the town.

Today the Newton Police Department is located at 8 Merrimac Road. The department currently has 7 full-time officers, 4 part-time officers, 1 Office Manager, and 1 Animal Control Officer.
