Rabies Vaccinations

Vaccinations against rabies are required for dogs, cats and ferrets (RSA 436:100). Rabies vaccinations must be administered by a licensed veterinarian at the age of 3 months. Revaccination must be done every three years.

Annual Rabies Clinic

The Town of Newton holds a rabies clinic annually in March at the Central Fire Station on South Main Street. Residents in all towns are welcome. Rabies vaccinations and microchips are offered by a licensed veterinarian at a minimal cost. The Town Clerk is available at the clinic so that Newton residents can license their dogs.

Procedure/Requirements for Licensing Dogs

Dogs that are 4 months old or older must be licensed annually. This is done through the office of the Town Clerk. You must bring a current rabies certificate from a licensed veterinarian. The cost to license your dog is $6.50 if the dog is spayed or neutered, $10.00 if the dog is not spayed or neutered. Residents age 65 or older pay $2.00. Dog licenses are effective from May 1 of each year to April 30 of the subsequent year. If you fail to license or renew your dog’s license by April 30, you will be subject to a $25.00 penalty. If you no longer own your dog, please notify the Town Clerk.

Guidelines for Dog Owners

  • Provide adequate food and shelter
  • Provide fresh water at all times
  • Spay or neuter your pet
  • Vaccinations and licensing must be done on a yearly basis
  • Keep a collar and ID tags on your pet when outside
  • Ensure that your pet is supervised or safely confined when you are not home

Please note: It is a violation of RSA 466:31-II to allow your dog to run “at large,” meaning off the premises of the owner or keeper and not under the control of any person.

Reporting Animal Bites

In the event any animal bites or scratches any person it should be reported immediately to the Animal Control Officer or to the Newton Police Department within 24 hours of the incident.
